«Підодіяльник» – суржик: как на украинском языке правильно называть элементы постельного белья

Linguist Alexander Avramenko shared his insights on how to correctly name elements of bedding in Ukrainian language, as many people often use the classic surzhyk. In his recent interview, he emphasized the importance of preserving the purity and accuracy of the Ukrainian language, especially when it comes to everyday vocabulary.

Surzhyk is a mix of Ukrainian and Russian languages, commonly used in Ukraine. It is often considered as a lower form of language, lacking proper grammar and vocabulary. However, with the rise of globalization and technological advancements, the use of surzhyk has become more widespread, especially among younger generations.

One area where surzhyk is commonly used is in naming elements of bedding. For instance, the word «підодіяльник» (pidodyalnyk), which is a mix of Ukrainian words «підодія» (pidodiya) and «одіяло» (odiyało), is often used to refer to a duvet cover. This, according to Avramenko, is incorrect and should be replaced with the correct term «комплект постільної білизни» (komplekt postilnoyi bilizni) or «прикривало» (prykrivalo).

In his interview, Avramenko explained that the incorrect use of surzhyk not only affects the beauty and richness of the Ukrainian language, but it also leads to misunderstandings and confusion among native speakers. He also added that the use of surzhyk is a sign of disrespect towards the language and its heritage.

Furthermore, Avramenko stressed the importance of using Ukrainian terminology, especially in the educational system. He believes that proper usage of language should be taught from a young age to create a strong foundation for the preservation of the Ukrainian language.

Some other commonly used surzhyk terms for elements of bedding are «подушка» (podushka) instead of «картатка» (kartatka) for a pillow, «простирадло» (prostiradlo) instead of «простирадло-підковдра» (prostiradlo-pidkovdra) for a fitted sheet, and «полотенце» (polotentsye) instead of «рушник» (rushnyk) for a towel.

In conclusion, it is crucial to use proper Ukrainian terminology when referring to elements of bedding. Not only does it preserve the purity and accuracy of the language, but it also shows respect towards the Ukrainian heritage. Let us make a conscious effort to use correct Ukrainian terms and help preserve the beauty of our language for future generations.
